Happy (Chinese) New Year!

恭禧發財!

Yesterday while doing our grocery shopping, we made a quick stop to the Asian food store for my weekly supply of snack, and the joint was packed!  A cursory glance at the calendar revealed that it was Chinese New Year’s Eve, aka an excuse to go out and eat some Chinese food!

To help welcome in the Year of the Snake, we took a trip down to our favorite Dim Sum place, Canton House! As always, the food was delicious and the service amazing.  It was packed as expected, but our food didn’t take long at all to get to us.  Here is a small sampling of what was consumed…. I’m afraid the Spicy Pig Ears and the Chicken feet in Black Bean sauce didn’t last long enough for me to take pictures of them!

Raising Cane’s Omaha – Grand Opening!

I had the pleasure of visiting Raising Cane’s in Lincoln when we went up to watch Creighton crush the Fuskers, so when I learned one was opening up here in Omaha, I was excited to say the least!

The thing I love about Raising Cane’s is the back story.  In a nutshell, it’s founder, Todd Graves, presented his plan for the restaurant while in business school at LSU.  His professor basically scoffed at it and said it would never work!  Obviously today we know who came out on top!  You can read more about here, but suffice to say maybe my plan for domesticated squirrels can work out after all!

Anyways, they basically chose the coldest day of the year to open the Omaha location, as in -30 degrees with the windchill!  I got there around 9:30, but people at the front of the line where there since 7:00 AM!  It was so cold my iPhone could not keep a charge… in fact I had to run it under the hand dryer in the bathroom for it to turn back on!

The doors opened promptly at 10:00, and everyone was glad to get out of the cold and start chowing down on chicken!  We were rewarded with awesome T-shirts, a coupon for free chicken on our next visit, and were entered into a drawing for free chicken for a year… totally worth it!  The chicken was of course, amazing…crispy on the outside and nice and juicy on the inside.  The Canes sauce takes that and makes it even better!   To wash it all down, delicious sweet tea!  I love the fact that you can even buy a gallon of the stuff to take home with you should you desire.

I even made the Omaha World Herald’s online coverage… you can see me here with my trademark Creighton hat taking a photo!  Speaking of photos, here are mine (not too many since it was so cold!):

Dragon Cafe

With the recent demise of our favorite Chinese place, Mrs. Douglas and I have been searching for a suitable replacement.  I have driven past Dragon Cafe numerous times, and several of my friends had eaten there as well, so we decided to bite the bullet and go on a Foodventure!

Dragon Cafe is pretty cool in that in addition to having Chinese food, they also have sushi available as well (complete with a bar).   There were several flat screens around which was also a nice bonus.  The wheels were already turning with the thought of watching a CU away game and chowing down on Chinese food!

We kinda went overboard, ordering a little bit of everything:

Overall it was a pretty solid meal!  The portions were actually big too, so we went home with leftovers.  I guess my only gripe was the tea… it tasted pretty weak, and it was served in tiny expresso cups!  Other than that, everything was pretty legit!

Definitely looking forward to trying this place out a couple more times.
